Freeze Specified Layers in a Layout Viewport

A major benefit to using layout viewports is that you can selectively freeze layers in each layout viewport. You can also specify default visibility settings for new viewports and for new layers. As a result, you can view different objects in each layout viewport.

You can thaw or freeze layer in current viewport and future layout viewports without affecting other viewports. Frozen layers are invisible. They are not regenerated or plotted. In the illustration, the layer showing terrain has been frozen in one viewport.


Thawing the layer restores visibility. The easiest way to freeze or thaw layers in the current viewport is to use the Layer Properties Manager.

In the Layer Properties Manager, on the right side, use the column labeled VP Freeze to freeze one or more layers in the current layout viewport. To display the VP Freeze column, you must be on a layout tab. Specify the current layout viewport by double-clicking anywhere within its borders.

Freeze or Thaw Layers Automatically in New Layout Viewports


You can set visibility defaults for specific layers in all new layout viewports. For example, you can restrict the display of dimensions by freezing the DIMENSIONS layer in all new viewports. If you create a viewport that requires dimensions, you can override the default setting by changing the setting in the current viewport. Changing the default for new viewports does not affect existing viewports.

Create New Layers That Are Frozen in All Layout Viewports

You can create new layers that are frozen in all existing and new layout viewports. Then you can thaw the layers in the viewports you specify. This is a shortcut for creating a new layer that is visible only in a single viewport.

To freeze or thaw layers in the current layout viewport

1. Double-click within a layout viewport to make it current.
2. Click Home tab  Layer panel  Layer Properties.
3. In the Layer Properties Manager, select the layers to freeze or thaw.
4. Hold down CTRL to select more than one layer. Hold down SHIFT to select a sequence of layers.
5. Click the icon in the VP Freeze column for one of the selected layers.
6. Click OK.

To view a list of layers that are frozen in the current viewport

1. Click a layout tab.
2. Double-click within a layout viewport to make it current.
3. Click Home tab  Layer panel  Layer Properties.
4. In the Layer Properties Manager, look at the VP Freeze column for the Freeze/Thaw in Current Viewports icon.
5. Click OK.

To freeze or thaw layers in all viewports

1. Click a layout tab.
2. Click Home tab  Layer panel  Layer Properties.
3. In the Layer Properties Manager, select one or more layers to freeze or thaw.
4. Hold down CTRL to select more than one layer. Hold down SHIFT to select a sequence of layers.
5. In the Freeze column, click the icon to freeze or thaw.

To freeze or thaw layers in paper space

1. Click a layout tab.
2. Make sure that you are in paper space. (On the status bar, PAPER is on.)
3. Click Home tab  Layer panel  Layer Properties.
4. In the Layer Properties Manager, select the layer or layers you want to freeze or thaw.
5. In the Freeze column, click the icon to change a layer's state. The sun icon means that a layer is thawed; the snowflake icon means that a layer is frozen.
6. Click OK.

To freeze or thaw layers in all new viewports

1. Click a layout tab.
2. Click Home tab  Layer panel  Layer Properties.
3. In the Layer Properties Manager, select the layer or layers you want to be automatically frozen or thawed in new viewports you create.
4. Hold down CTRL to select more than one layer. Hold down SHIFT to select a sequence of layers.
5. In the New VP Freeze column, click the icon to change a layer's state. The sun icon means that a layer is thawed; the snowflake icon means that a layer is frozen.
6. Click OK.

 To create new layers that are frozen in all viewports

1. Click a layout tab.
2. Click Home tab  Layer panel  Layer Properties.
3. Click the New Layer button to create a layer.
4. Rename the new layer.
5. Click the icon in the Freeze column to change the layer's state to frozen. The sun icon means that a layer is thawed; the snowflake icon means that a layer is frozen.
6. Click OK.

The Indian Market
In India, Autodesk is the dominant player and has more than 80% of the market share. Unlike in other countries where Autodesk has on average 60-65%. Almost all the technical colleges and private training institutes in India only train people in AutoCAD.
Many have tried to introduce different products, but most have failed to make a significant dent in the Indian market due to reliability issues. Because of this, CAD customers are hesitant and not willing to take a risk with new products.
Nevertheless, Hope decided that with the right product, and right strategy, they could be successful.  And that is just what happened.

Hope’s Strategy and Persistence Pays Off
In the first year, Hope pitched ZWCAD as an effective replacement of AutoCAD, and not LT. In order for customers to feel ZWCAD’s power, they created a dedicated team to helps customers transfer their existing LISP programs to ZWCAD.  They also linked existing excel and database applications. This enabled Hope to not only fight only on the price stage, but on ZWCAD’s technical strength as well. In order to effectively spread the word about ZWCAD, Hope did a large number of seminars all across India and targeted a specific market segment which gave them reasonable success.

Over the next 3 years, Hope implemented and experimented with other strategies, trying to find what worked best for ZWCAD in India.  They reached out to over a hundred thousand companies and introduced ZWCAD in over 40 seminars in just one year. During this time, they were hit with an obstacle. The leading CAD provider in India dropped their prices and declared a price war with their competitors.  Hope would not give up, they just worked harder. They did not want to be one of the companies that failed because a large rival pushed them aside.  So Hope strategized and introduced a 3 year subscription plan where customers receive yearly upgrades for a greatly reduced price, while at the same time Hope assured their customers about their long term commitment to them, and ZWCAD.
This plan worked, so Hope decided to open up to the mechanical and plant design market. Because of their mature sales and tech team, they were able to give continuous support and expand their market, even alluring large multi-nationals. Always looking to give added value to their customers, Hope started working with third party developers and developed a few applications themselves.  Education is important and Hope believed in the future generation of CAD students and ZWCAD. Therefore, they began to work with private training institutes, allowing students to train on 2D CAD using ZWCAD.
All of these efforts grew ZWCAD’s name in India and it is now known as a powerful cost-effective 2D CAD solution. Hope has worked tirelessly to spread knowledge about how ZWCAD can not only save users money, but also offer legal CAD software with advanced features that can get the job done.

ZWCAD+ Takes the User Interface Lead with SmartMouse

Guangzhou, China: October 31, 2012—SmartMouse is a new feature in ZWCAD+ providing command input through mouse movement. Due to the incomparability of SmartMouse technology in the CAD industry, it has been a hit among users and CAD experts alike by providing a whole new UI experience. In order for users to learn more about SmartMouse, the product manager of ZWCAD+ shared design ideas of the feature during a webinar talk, which was well received by the audience.


After the ZWCAD+ official release, the feature first attracted CAD experts to test it. Ralph Grabowski, a renowned author of over 140 books and several hundred magazine articles about computer-aided design, commented on the feature in his recent product review of ZWCAD+: “With the mouse gesturing they call SmartMouse, ZWCAD+ does take the user interface lead over some big-name CAD products. By holding down the right mouse button and dragging the cursor in the shape of a letter of the alphabet (or in a specific directions), I activate a command. Best of all, the SmartMouseConfig command fully customizes any of the movements.”

As SmartMouse gained in popularity, more and more CAD users became interested in the design idea of this new feature. In order to show all the possibilities and explain how SmartMouse works, Daniel Huang the Product Manager of ZWCAD+ hosted a webinar.

“As time progresses, software development has become more and more humanized in user experience. We think that there can be a different and even better UI experience for users.”

We had some of our users test this feature and they were amazed. Therefore, we spared no effort to perfect it by collecting more suggestions from users and the final design has proven a success. Now a growing number of users worldwide have found this feature a nice time saver after adapting.”

Convenient Parametric Building Components

Various types of building components such as doors, windows and roofs are integrated into ZWCAD Architectural 2014 Beta, with which designers can freely insert any patterns from the library, and change the shape, width and length to fit their specific design needs. Architectural design will be more convenient with designers able to modify and justify the position of doors and windows in batch. With only a few clicks, all the pile widths, distances to wall and axis will automatically follow the adjusted batch components, which will save a significant amount of labor and time.

Flexible Annotation System

ZWCAD Architecture 2014 Beta makes full use of fast and flexible associative dimensions to greatly improve efficiency. The in-place editable texts and tables clearly annotate the drawings, while the room tags separate each room for better drawing evaluation and management. With necessary architecture symbols such as compass, revision cloud, symmetry symbols and more, users can create more accurate designs in less time.
